Description

When only the best of world cruisers will do…..Charles David Yachts is  please to present S/V “Sophrosyne” – This thoroughbred is ready to head South now!

> Professionally Re-Rigged (2018)
> Mast & Boom Removed – Painted (2018)
> Yanmar 54 Hp. & Transmission (2013)
> Hard to get! “OC” Tender Package (2018)….are just a few of the “must have” updates completed under her current owners.

A near-perfect live-aboard cruiser for a world cruising couple – and that’s just what Bob Perry & the Saga Concept team had in mind when they introduced the Saga 43 in 1997. Over 55 Saga 43’s are now worldwide! Taking the lead from the shorthanded offshore racing fleets like the Whitbread and BOC around the world races, Saga opted to maximize waterline length to gain the desired interior space, and to judiciously pare weight, and retain a relatively narrow beam. It is a proven offshore concept with a strong scientific basis.

The result is the Saga 43, a more suitable and more comfortable offshore cruiser with a high range of positive stability and better overall seakeeping qualities than boats with extreme beam. The hull has an ultra-fine entry angle with low drag, and is therefore very easily driven through the water and chop with far less sail area required. That makes for less strain on the rig, lower sheet and winch loads, and most importantly, less sweat for the crew. The big bonus is that the Saga 43’s longer waterline length translates to higher speeds under both power and sail than ordinary boats with the same LOA.

Neither a cutter nor a sloop in the usual sense, the rig has tandem roller furling units for the headsails. The rig is proportioned so that it does not require overlapping headsails for power when sailing close-hulled. The inner furler handles the self-tacking jib for windward work. A custom Harken traveler on the foredeck reduces tacking up a narrow channel to a mere turn of the wheel. After bearing away to a reach, the crew simply rolls out the special high clew reaching genoa on the outer furler to increase horsepower downwind. The jib is then furled out of the way.

This boat is a rare mix of speed and comfort in a great looking package. Revolutionary fast design by Robert Perry…this is a connoisseur’s boat…a sailor’s boat. Big sail plan + easily driven hull = a great light air boat. It’s a truly thrilling boat to sail! If you sail for pleasure there isn’t another boat in its class that will delight the senses more than a Saga 43.

Saga 43’s can be found worldwide. Bay sailing, coastal cruising or crossing oceans, it’s your choice and “Sophrosyne” is your magic carpet!

Boat Description

Sailing Characteristics

The pedigree of the Saga 43 is known world wide. Her rig is BOC-influenced and optimized for shorthanded crews. Nothing on the market is easier to handle – Neither a cutter nor a sloop in the usual sense, the rig has tandem Harken Mark II roller furling units for the headsails. The rig is proportioned so that it does not require overlapping headsails for power when sailing close-hauled. The inner furler handles the self-tacking jib for windward work. A custom Harken traveler on the foredeck reduces tacking up a narrow channel to a mere turn of the wheel. After bearing away to a reach, the crew simply rolls out the reaching Genoa on the outer furler to increase horsepower downwind. The jib is then furled out of the way. The resulting forward shift in the centre of pressure maintains a light balanced helm pressure and superior control in conditions that wider beam boats with conventional rigs will get quite heavy on the helm and tend to want to round-up or spin-out. Owners love these boats for blue water cruising due to their impressive sail area to displacement ratio of 20.01. Control is very desirable; in light air and at deeper downwind angles, an asymmetrical spinnaker may be flown from the stainless steel bowsprit without the complications of either a conventional spinnaker pole or the associated leaks and problems of a retracting type pole. Mainsail hoisting, sheeting and reefing are taken care of from inside the safety of the cockpit with the push of a button on the Harken 40.2 ST 2-Speed electric winch. Mainsail handling is further simplified by a Harken ‘Batt-Car’ System.

Accommodations

The expansive and open living quarters invite owners and guests aboard with 6’5″ headroom and hand crafted cherry-wood joinery. Upon entry, you’re met with a large and open galley to starboard featuring all the comforts of home. There is ample stowage throughout and stainless steel grab rails for added safety. Custom carpeting lines the sole (with teak and holly beneath) in the entry way up to the navigation station.

To port, a large day or guest head with separate shower boasting a semicircular acrylic shower door on tracks. The head is made of one-piece molded fibreglass and has large windows for ventilation. Aft of the day head, one finds access to the guest stateroom which is well ventilated with two opening ports and an overhead hatch. There is a cedar lined hanging locker and drawers with coriander tops.

Moving forward into the main salon area, a wonderfully designed navigation station with electrical panel and instrumentation sits to starboard. Two large settee’s with stowage behind seat backs line both sides of the hull and feature new ultrasuede upholstery and terrycloth cruising covers. One notices the openness when relaxing down below as the keel stepped mast does not impede line of sight when visiting. A drop leaf centreline cherry table which has centre storage and can comfortably seats six. There are three cabinets above the port settee and two cabinets and a book shelf above the starboard settee. There are also grab rails throughout the cabin for added safety at sea.

Forward again in the master stateroom, a generous port side berth with storage cabinets along the port side hull, book shelf along forward bulkhead, and to starboard two hanging lockers and drawer storage. Access to the owners head is through the forward bulkhead. Featuring a large molded fibreglass space with lots of ventilation and storage.
